Steven Newell Burrows Obituary
Steven Newell Burrows, 77, of Campton, NH, formally of Holderness, NH, died of cancer on Monday, July 29th, 2024, at his home. His wife of 38 years, Doreen (Ouellette) Burrows, and his daughters, April Burrows Hibberd and Stephanie Burrows Erskine were at his side when he passed.
Steve was born in Plymouth, NH on April 22nd, 1947, to James M. Burrows and Rita (Morrison) Burrows. He graduated from Ashland High School, Class of 1965. In 1966 Steve signed up to join the United States Navy under the “Buddy System” with his best friend, Willy Holland. Shortly before reporting for active duty, Steve and Willy, attempting to enjoy one more ride, were involved in an automobile accident and Steve suffered a broken neck. Therefore, Steve was honorably discharged from the Navy on August 17th, 1966, after officially serving for 1 month and eleven days.
Steve started his adult career at Kip & Joe’s VW-Audi- Mazda of Gilford, NH. His first position was as the car wash/auto detailer, then as a mechanic, moving to service advisor and finally in the sales department where he truly belonged. During the 40 + years in the auto business, he worked at Beranger Volkswagen in Rochester, Skip King VW-Mazda-Audi in Gilford, and Rheinhardt Buick GMC in Plymouth. In May of 2008 his career path brought him to work for the State of New Hampshire, Department of Safety, Division of Motor Vehicles as a Licensing Agent until May 2011. Later that same year he became a Court Security Officer for the State of New Hampshire, Administrative Office of the Courts and retired from this position in June 2015. All throughout his adult years he was involved in serving his community. He was a certified EMT and a Deputy Fire Chief working for the Ashland Fire Department. Steve also served as an Auxiliary State Trooper for the State of New Hampshire, Troop F, from 1979 to 1987 and later returning to the same position from 1994 to 2000.
The past several years he enjoyed volunteering for Restore of Plymouth organizing the tool section and later working for the Got Lunch Program of Campton working with a dedicated and amazing group of individuals.
You would often find him in jeans and a “Life is Good” t-shirt enjoying the simple pleasures of life. A few of his favorite activities included going out for breakfast, listening to the police/fire scanner, collecting baseball cards and coins, mowing his lawn on his John Deere mower with a beer in the cup holder, becoming a grilling expert, enjoying nature with frequent visitors of owls, moose, deer and bears in his back yard, pruning the peach tree on the front lawn and finally finding different ways to deter the bears and chipmunks that would come to eat the peaches.
But Steve’s most important passion was his family. Steve and Doreen shared an extraordinary and happy marriage and Steve was blessed with 5 children. Jeff, April and Michael and a bit later in life adding Andrew and Stephanie. He genuinely enjoyed his 14 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Steve was a gentle man and had a kind soul. He shared his values by setting the example of what it means to have integrity, a high moral compass and he was respected, admired and truly loved by family and friends.
