Gail Armstrong Custance Obituary

Gail Armstrong Custance Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gail Armstrong Custance, 68, of Holderness, NH. She died peacefully in her home on October 21, 2024, after a long illness.
Gail is survived by her husband of 46 years, Steven Custance. Her three sons, Bradley of Thornton, NH, Matthew and his wife Ashley of Campton, NH and Daniel and his wife Michelle of Campton NH. She was a wonderful grandmother to seven grandchildren, Brianna, Logan, Camryn, Landon, Audra, Will and Avery. They were her pride and joy. She was always present on the sidelines of sporting events, at school programs and graduations, or keeping a watchful eye on them at her home on Squam Lake.
Gail is also survived by her parents, Frank and Marilyn Armstrong of Burlington, MA, her siblings, Stephen Armstrong of Palm Springs, CA, Scott Armstrong and his wife Faith of Bedford, MA, and Nancy Gaw and her husband Bill of Woburn, MA.  She is also survived by her husband’s siblings, Howard and Phyllis of Boxborough, MA, Dana and Dorothy of Belmont, NH, Janet and David LaFond of Laconia, NH and Pamela and Walter Vaughan of Westford, MA. She had several adoring nieces and nephews, Benjamin, Sarah, Grace, Rebekah, Celia, Emma, Derek, Joel, Amy, Bryan and Philip.  Gail leaves an extended family of grand nieces and nephews, dear cousins and treasured friends.
Gail was born to Frank and Marilyn Armstrong in Arlington, MA on February 4, 1956. After graduating from Lexington High School in 1973, Gail continued on to Worcester State University and graduated with a degree in Education. Early in her career she was a bank teller, a retail associate, a substitute teacher, and a full-time bookkeeper for the family business when her family moved to New Hampshire. She was exceptional at her favorite job which was raising her three sons.
Growing up at the First Baptist Church of Lexington, Gail was an active participant in her youth group, and it is also where she met her husband.  They were married in this Church and together they remained active in many church activities including the coffeehouse, young adult groups and their annual church fair and auctions. Gail loved playing cards and games, puzzles and doing crafts. A gracious hostess, Gail opened her doors to family and friends for holiday dinners and Superbowl parties. Living on Squam Lake, NH, Gail was always prepared to throw another burger on the grill for the summer crowd which was sure to stop in.    She always ended a visit saying two things, “When will we see you next?” and “Come back any time”. She spent her life devoted to her family and friends and building memories to last a lifetime.
Gail was a shining light in the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her journey on this earth was one marked by love, compassion, and dedication to her family. Her passing has left a void in the hearts of her family, friends, and many more whose lives were touched by her.  We choose to remember her not for the way her life was altered due to her illness, but for the way it was lived, and for the profound impact it had on the lives of those who had the pleasure of knowing her.

A service to remember and honor Gail’s life will be held at the First Baptist Church in Lexington, MA on November 2, 2024 at 11am. A reception will follow in Conwell Hall.

In Lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Alzheimers Research Foundation.
