Darlette Mae Smith passed away on July 4, 2026 at 67. She was born in New Hampton, NH on November 22, 1958, graduated from Wells College and earned a master’s degree in library and information science from Simmons College (now Simmons University).  

Her professional career included library positions with Watertown (MA) Public Library,  White Pines College (now Chester College) in Chester, NH, and the New Hampshire State Library Talking Books Program.

In recent years, her health challenges led to residency at Belknap County Nursing Home.

She loved her family, cozy mysteries, the color purple, squirrels, scrabble, and crocheting – not always in that order. Her humorous Bible lessons for Sunday School children at Ashland United Methodist Church will be remembered by both children and adults and she for some time she edited the church newsletter.

She is survived by her mother June Smith, her sister Deborah Smith-Cohen, her brother Glen Smith (Julie Merrill), and nieces and nephews Hannah Cohen (Cory Cohen), Samuel Cohen, Faith Smith, Benjamin Smith, and Moriah Smith. 

A funeral will be held at Ashland United Methodist Church on Saturday, July 11, 2026 at 11:00 AM.

Deep gratitude is given to the staff at Belknap County Nursing Home for their care, respect, and attention during Darlette’s stay.
